Losing all of your teeth — or facing that prospect — is one of the more emotionally significant experiences in dental care. It affects not just how you eat and speak, but how you feel when you look in the mirror and how comfortable you are smiling in front of others. Complete dentures restore all of that: your ability to eat a full range of foods, to speak clearly, and to present yourself with confidence. At Heart of Hingham Dental Aesthetics, Dr. Sandhu approaches complete dentures with careful attention to fit, aesthetics, and the individual goals of each patient — because a denture that fits well and looks natural changes lives in a way that an ill-fitting one simply cannot.
Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in an arch (upper, lower, or both), and there are two primary types to understand:
Conventional dentures are fabricated after all remaining teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has fully healed — typically eight to twelve weeks after extraction. Because they’re made to fit healed tissue, conventional dentures tend to fit more predictably and require fewer adjustments over time.
Immediate dentures are fabricated in advance and placed on the same day teeth are extracted, so you’re never without teeth during the healing process. The tradeoff is that as the tissue heals and the jaw shape changes, immediate dentures typically require relining or replacement within the first year to maintain a good fit.
Dr. Sandhu will discuss both options based on your situation, your timeline, and your priorities to help you make the decision that’s right for you.
The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation and impressions of your mouth. If extractions are needed, those are coordinated and the healing timeline is factored into the fabrication schedule. Multiple appointments follow for fitting adjustments, bite registration, and a “try-in” appointment where you can see and approve the appearance of your denture before it’s finalized. Once delivered, Dr. Sandhu schedules follow-up appointments to address any fit or comfort concerns as the tissue continues to heal and settle. Patience and clear communication during this period are key — most patients need several adjustments to arrive at a denture that fits and functions well.
Her educational foundation provides the scientific knowledge necessary for accurate diagnoses and effective treatments. However, Dr. Kupke understands that excellence in dentistry requires ongoing learning. To maintain this commitment to excellence, Dr. Kupke regularly participates in continuing education courses and professional development opportunities. These additional certifications and training sessions keep her at the forefront of dental innovation, allowing her to incorporate new approaches that improve patient outcomes and comfort.
New dentures take time to get used to. Eating and speaking will feel different at first, and excess saliva, minor soreness on the gum tissue, and a sense that the denture feels unfamiliar are all normal in the initial weeks. These experiences typically resolve within one to two months as your muscles and oral tissues adapt. Soft foods, patience, and keeping your follow-up appointments go a long way. Dr. Sandhu’s team is available to make adjustments promptly if any area is causing persistent soreness — we’d rather you call than wait through discomfort.
With proper care, complete dentures typically last seven to ten years before the fit has changed enough to warrant replacement. Over time, the underlying jaw bone changes shape in the absence of tooth roots, which causes dentures to fit less precisely — a process that can be managed with periodic relining or, eventually, refabrication.
It’s generally recommended to remove dentures at night to allow the gum tissue to rest and reduce the risk of bacterial buildup. Dentures should be stored in water or a denture-cleaning solution to prevent them from drying out and warping. Dr. Sandhu will give you specific care instructions with your denture.
The cost of complete dentures varies depending on the type (conventional vs. immediate), the materials used, and the number of arches being replaced. Book a consultation for current pricing and to discuss how your dental insurance applies to your treatment.
Changes in fit are expected as the underlying bone changes shape — this is a normal consequence of tooth loss. If your dentures have become loose, uncomfortable, or difficult to keep in place, call us: a reline or replacement may be appropriate, and Dr. Sandhu will assess which option makes the most sense for your situation.
